Drug Store Deals

A big part of your grocery budget may be taken up buying things such as shampoo, soap, deodorant and other items that are sold at drug stores. But did you know that there are ways to score huge savings on your drug store purchases?

This article will focus on three of the major U.S. drug stores: CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Each of these three stores offer a similar program in which you can earn coupons for buying certain items. The coupons work just like cash in the store, so you can use them to buy almost anything that the store sells. For the sake of this article, Rite Aid’s term, Register Rewards (RRs), will be used.[ws_ads_post position=”right”]

Coupon Matchups

The first thing that you will want to do is sit down with the sales flyers from each drug store to see which items are on sale and, especially, which are offering Register Rewards. Sometimes the deals with Register Rewards are good even without a coupon. When you can add a coupon to the mix, however, the savings add up even more quickly.

Figuring the Cost

When figuring the cost of an item using coupons and that include Register Rewards, you must include the amount of the Register Rewards in order to learn the true cost of the item. For example:

Schick Razors are on sale for $8.99. You have a $3 off coupon and you will get $4 in Register Rewards.

Sale price:           $8.99

Minus coupon: $3.00

Minus RRs:          $4.00

Actual Cost:        $1.99

Keep in mind that the Register Rewards will be for use on your next purchase.

Spending the Rewards

Let’s say that you just had a very successful shopping trip and earned $15 in Register Rewards. Now what? The way to get the absolute best drug store deals is to save that $15 to apply towards next week’s sales. Of course, you will still want to match coupons, but if you continue to roll your Register Rewards from week to week you can slash the amount of money that you spend on personal care items.

Check out this real-life scenario.

Sale items that you want:

Pantene Shampoo, $3.99 with $1.50 RR, you have two $1 off coupons, so you buy two

Pantene 2 @ $3.99 =                       $7.98

Minus Coupons:                               -2.00

At the register you’ll pay:             $5.98

Huggies Diapers, $9.99 with $4 RR, you have a $2 off coupon

Huggies:                                               $9.99

Minus Coupons:                               -2.00

At the register you’ll pay:             $7.99

Crest Toothpaste, $2.99 with $1 RR, you have a $1 off coupon

Crest:                                                    $2.99

Minus Coupons:                               -1.00

At the register you’ll pay:             $1.99

Your total due would be $15.96. Apply your Register Rewards from last week and your out-of-pocket cost is only 96 cents PLUS you will get $8 in Register Rewards to use next time.

It takes a bit of planning and organization to get the best drug store deals but, as you can see by the example above, the savings are well worth it. Stock up on the items that are offering Register Rewards, and you’ll never have to pay full price for these items again.
