The 2013 Hottest Designers & How to get their Style on a Budget

Last week, Jason Wu’s dress was chosen by Michele Obama to wear at her husband’s second swearing in ceremony, but no one knew who the first lady would wear at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball.   When the President introduced his “date”, Mrs. Obama made her appearance in a red draped beautifully made dress by guess who – Jason Wu, and even he was shocked.

Wu at 28 is the designer that Mrs. Obama help rise to fame in 2009, when she wore his design of a white one-shouldered dress for President Obama’s first inaugural balls.  And he immediately found fame.

Jason Wu

But Wu has changed since the 2009 inauguration or as he has said he has grown his business and refined his taste.  His fashions have become a little more provocative, sexier, and more womanly. This was very evident in his 2013 spring collection show.

It seems that Mr. Wu, American design’s prince of prim and proper, opened his show with the model wearing a black leather sheath with a corset molded top.  And the next model was also wearing leather and lace with harnesses to follow.  Beside the leather and harnesses everything else was perfect Wu but it was a most unusual collection.

This young man is genius and is a fashion designer to follow through this year.  Of course everything currently in his shows is way above most women’s budgets and you have to be a stick figure to get into them but it will be interesting to see how they are priced when mass-produced in sizes that most women wear.

Narciso Rodriguez

Narciso Rodriguez is another interesting designer working in New York, focusing in formal wear for women.  His one high profile client was Carolyn Kennedy the wife of John Kennedy Jr.

Narciso was born in New Jersey of parents from Cuba.  He defied his parent’s wishes for him to study either law or medicine and instead graduated from the Parson’s School of Design in New York City.    He then worked freelance before starting at the Anne Klein label in 1985.   In 1991, he became part of the label of Calvin Klein concentrating in coats and furs.  Four years later, he became director of design at both Cerruit in Paris and TSE in New York.    He showed his collection for the first time in October of 1997 where he was recognized by VH1 fashion awards as the “best new designer” and won the same award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Rodriquez is another designer to watch during this year.

How to Have the Same Outfit

Of course, these two designers are selling their fashions for much more than most people can afford.  But if you watch them during the year for their fashions over the internet or in fashion magazines and you see something that you really love – see if someone who sews can help you make your own “designer” outfit.  Or look at secondhand shops and Re-Sell shops as you might find something that is close to what either of these designers create and you might love what you find.  You never know – one of their real designs might be at the Re-Sell shop someday – just keep watching.
