Acne is caused by a buildup of oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria that clog pores, causing infection in the hair follicles contained within the pores. The oil, called sebum, is produced naturally by oil glands within each follicle. Dead skin cells are carried by the oil to the skin’s surface. The oil and dead skin cells pick up dirt and bacteria on the skin’s surface, which can cause the clogging that leads to infection. The more oil and skin cells that collect in the pores, the more likely the follicles will become infected.
Puberty causes an overproduction of oil stimulated by an increase in hormones, which is why teenagers are prone to acne breakouts. Hormonal changes in adults can also cause acne to flare up at times. To clear up acne and prevent future outbreaks, you need to keep the pores free of dirt and oil, and exfoliate to remove the dead skin cells. There are several cheap facial scrubs for acne that you can make at home to remove dead skin cells and soothe your skin.
Egg Yolk Acne Scrub
- 1 egg yolk (discard the white)
- 2 tablespoons oatmeal
- 1 tablespoon coarse salt (Kosher or sea salt)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon warm water
Mix the egg yolk with the oatmeal, salt, water, and olive oil until it forms a smooth paste. Gently rub the paste on your skin for three minutes, and then splash rinse with warm water until the scrub is removed. The salt in the scrub will exfoliate the skin, and the oatmeal and egg yolk will lessen redness and irritation.
Sea Salt Acne Scrub
- ½ cup sea salt
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 tablespoon Aloe Vera gel
Combine all three ingredients and rub mixture onto your skin for several minutes, and then rinse off with warm water. Tea tree oil, which has natural antibiotic properties, can be added to this recipe to help rid the pores of bacteria. Just add 5-10 drops of the oil to the recipe.
Brown Sugar and Honey Acne Scrub
If you are in the midst of a severe breakout, this acne scrub is gentler than the recipes containing salt. The brown sugar will lightly exfoliate, and the honey will soothe irritated skin and promote healing.
- 3 tablespoons of honey
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
Mix the honey and brown sugar and then gently scrub your face with the mixture for several minutes. Rinse with warm water and lightly pat your skin dry.
Baking Soda Acne Scrub
For a gentle, effective acne scrub, add several tablespoons of baking soda to a small bowl of water. Form a light paste, adding additional baking soda if needed. Rub the paste on your skin, let it sit for several minutes, and then rinse your skin with warm water to remove the scrub.
Milk and Honey Acne Scrub
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon sugar
Combine the milk, honey, and sugar, and then rub the scrub on your skin for several minutes. Rinse face with warm water and pat dry. This is a very soothing facial scrub that will gently remove dead skin cells and reduce irritation.
